OWWA Announces Top 400 Scholarship Qualifiers for Children of OFWs

The OWWA announces the top 400 scholarship qualifiers for children of OFWs.

Qualified Scholars

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) provides scholarship to qualified children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) under the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP).

OWWA scholarship

Last October 2019, the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute conducted the qualifying exam for a total of 4,006 examinees from the Philippines and Saudi Arabia for the school year 2020-2021.

Of this number, the OWWA picked the top 400 who will receive educational assistance program.

The qualified dependents of OWWA member-OFWs have the liberty to choose any four or five-year course in college. They are given a fixed allowance of Php60,000 per school year which they can use for education-related expenses, such as tuition fees, books, uniforms, and other school needs.

Of the 400 qualified scholars, 53 are from National Capital Region (NCR), the place with the highest number of qualifiers this year. The rest of the qualifiers come from the provinces of Batangas, Benguet, Bohol, Cavite, Cebu, Iloilo, Laguna, Lanao del Norte, Leyte, Misamis Oriental, Pampanga, and Pangasinan.

This year, qualifiers in Saudi Arabia mostly hail from Al Khobar and Riyadh.

To help them in their studies, the new scholars who qualified for EDSP will undergo training and other learning enhancement activities.

400 scholarship qualifiers

Aside from the 400 qualifiers for EDSP, the OWWA also announced that there were 5 qualifiers for the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP) for OFWs or their dependents.

Just like the EDSP, scholars of the CMWSP also receive the same amount for their studies: Php60,000 per school year. However, the qualified scholars could only pick science and technology courses. This year’s qualifiers for the CMSWP hail from Benguet, Cagayan, and La Union.

Can All OFW Dependents Avail of OWWA Scholarship?

Not all OFW dependents can avail of the OWWA scholarship. First, they should be dependents of OFWs who are members of the OWWA.

Second, the OWWA provides scholarship only for qualified applicants who pass the test. Since there is a limit to the number of scholars they can support, only the top qualifiers are picked.
